A jogger was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Wednesday September 9th, 2009. The Utah pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of 1000 East and 11400 South in Sandy, Utah.

According to KSL news, the woman was jogging in the crosswalk early Wednesday morning when she was hit by a Honda SUV. The driver stated that she was turning and could not see the driver in the dark. She flew 30 feet onto the street and sustained massive head trauma. Emergency crews arrived and transported the jogger to University of Utah Medical Center by helicopter where she later died.

Police could not immediately identify her because she did she was not carrying ID, but they recently verified her identity and were able to notify family members.

Utah Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According public knowledge website walkinginfo.org, in 2007, 4654 lives were lost due to pedestrian related accidents and over 70,000 were injured. That is fatality every 113 minutes and an injury every 8 minutes. In Utah there were 32 pedestrian related fatalities.

I wish the family of this woman the very best as they mourn this tragic loss. Unfortunately, when the family will be faced with with a mountain of medical bills and funeral expenses. Utah law requires vehicles to yield to pedestrians, especially pedestrians crossing in crosswalks. The family of the woman who was hit has a wrongful death claim against the insurance of the woman who hit her.
