10 Steps to be a Heads up Driver
1. Plan ahead. Read maps and get directions before you travel.
2. Put Away Electronic Devices. Turn off your cell phone before you start driving so you are not tempted to use it.
3. Prepare your kids and make them comfortable before you start driving. Secure kids in their seatbelts or car seats before you start driving. Make sure they have snacks or other necessary items so you will not be distracted trying to facilitate their needs. If they need addittional attention during your trip, pull off the road to care for them.
4. Eat off the road. Eat your meals and snacks before traveling or take a break and stop. Don’t drive distracted by eating and driving.
5. Stow your Loose Items. Stash any loose items that might roll around and distract your driving.
6. Check your Car before you drive. Check your tire pressure, wash your windshield, adjust your seat before you drive. The fewer distractions the better.
7. Get ready before you drive. Your car shouldn’t be a dressing room. Get dressed, brush your hair, put on make-up or tie before you leave.
8. Focus. Safe driving requires attentiveness. Scan the road, use your mirros, watch your speed. Really maintaining focus on the road.
9. Take time to evaluate your driving. When you are a passenger, use that time to evaluate your own driving techniques. Do you engage in the same poor driving tactics as the driver? This can help you improve your overall awareness.
10. Use new technology. Sharpen your ability to respond quickly to risks on the road.
