Deer-Vehicle Accidents: A Large Cost for Utah Residents
Posted By Ron Kramer on December 23, 2009
Workers made some much-needed repairs on fences along U.S.89/91 in Sardine Canyon, Utah in an attempt to reduce the number of animal related Utah auto crashes. The UHP report two or three collisions daily with deer in the area. Officials say that this particle highway in Sardine Canyon was built where a deer winter range once existed causing animals to come down looking for food and to lick salt off the pavement.
Standard.net reports that Utah police file nearly 2,200 deer-vehicle accidents each year, and that number includes only those accidents that involve more than $1,000 in property damage. According to wildlifeandroads.org, the average cost per deer-vehicle crash is $3,470.
Deer-Vehicle Collisions in Utah
Courtesy of State Farm Insurance, here are some tips to help you avoid Deer-vehicle collisions:
* Be aware of posted deer crossing sings. These signs are placed in areas with high deer traffic.
* Deer are most active between 6 and 9 p.m.
* Use your high beams as much as possible at night to illuminate the road ahead.
* Deer tend to travel in herds: if you see one there is a good chance others are close.
* If a deer collision is inevitable, don’t attempt to swerve out of the way because that could place you in that path of another vehicle or in oncoming traffic.
