A 14-year-old girl from Pleasant Grove, Utah was seriously injured when a semi truck ran over her foot. The accident occurred on Monday, September 22, 2009 on the corner of 600 West and Center Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah. According to KSL news, the girl and a friend were standing on the corner when a two trailer semi-truck carrying rock was making a right turn. The girl was facing away from the intersection when the rear set of tires on the truck’s back trailer caught the girls ankle. Her foot was completely severed.

The driver of semi was apparently unaware that he had hit the girl and did not stop. Police believe they have located the truck involved and are running test to make sure. The girl was taken to the hospital where she is undergoing surgery.

I just met with a client last week who experienced a similar situation when a Utah big rig driver cut the corner too sharp while making a right-hand turn and injured my client. Commercial drivers have a duty to turn carefully so as to not cause injury to pedestrians who may happen to be standing at the intersection junction. In this case, it sounds like the girl may have actually been in a marked or un-marked crosswalk. It is even more important at crosswalks to make sure the turn is made safe.

The parents of this poor girl would do well to talk to a Utah trucking attorney regarding their daughter’s remedies in this situation. If the truck was found, then a claim needs to be brought against the trucking company and the driver for negligence. If the truck cannot be found, then the parents can make a claim against their own uninsured motorist coverage. I wish this young woman the best recovery possible.
